Question of the Month
Q:
I’m 27 year old woman and I was recently
prescribed Proscar 5mg to for my acne due to PCOS. Currently I’m taking Jeanine
OC (European OC similar to Diane 35 or US counterpart Yasmine) but I would like
to eventually have children so my questions are: How long can Proscar stay in my
body after I stop taking it? How long would I have to wait after I stop taking
to get pregnant? Are there any other side effects?
A:
As you know, there is concern that Proscar
might affect development of a male fetus so it must not be taken by any woman
who is pregnant or trying to be. I recommend stopping it and the birth control
pills at least a month before trying to conceive and using other contraception
during that month.
However, Proscar does not help
acne and is not very good for female hair loss except as an adjunct to other
testosterone blockers.
Side effects are minimal in women
since all Proscar does is inhibit the enzyme that activates testosterone to DHT
(dihydrothestosterone).
Hope this is helpful.
