bullet I have severe hot flashes and burning feet. They started after I went off HRT several years ago. My doctor has tried several things and I am now having success with 10 Miligrams of Lexapro a day. I just can't figure how the burning feet has to do with hormones. Have you ever heard of this problem?  Answer

bullet I was diagnosed with PCOS about 4 years ago. I was also diagnosed with severe Rosacea at about the same time. With doctors' help, I got the rosacea and PCOS both under control, lost 85 lbs, had a baby and am now suffering more than ever. The rosacea I have is believed to be aggravated by my low levels of testosterone and I am now using progesterone cream, along with some other natural remedies. I wonder, have you heard of the connection between PCOS and rosacea?   Answer

bullet I am quite interested in trying breast enhancement pills, but skeptical at the same time. I have been researching on the internet about certain types. Several sites stated that there are only 4 herbs that help breasts grow safely: fenugreek, fennel, wild yam, saw palmetto. I was wondering if these herbs would work with breast growth, and if it would be safe to take these pills.  Answer

bullet I have all the indicators for PCOS (Acne/Alopecia, abnormal hormonal levels, cysts, high cholesterol, abdominal weight gain) but I was given the 3 hour glucose/insulin test and was told that I did not have an insulin resistance problem, and therefore should not be medicated for it. But I wonder- is that necessarily true? Could the 'normal' insulin levels for most people be wrong for me? Should I ask to try an insulin level treating drug? I've been on hormonal treatment for a year now and other than clearing my skin a little and somewhat lessening my period pains it had not helped much.  Answer

bullet My two sisters and I have all have PCOS. My oldest sister is slim and in great health. My second oldest sister is severely obese, diabetic and has a host of other troubles. In the past four years, after I went off the pill, I have gained 125 lbs. My sister's doctor has her scheduled for gastric bypass surgery. My doctor wants me to have the surgery. I just don't see the surgery as a solution. I cannot figure out how making a stomach smaller will take away all the hormone issues we are plagued with. Please explain why doctor's are considering this drastic surgery for PCOS Answer

bullet Why would hair follicles suddenly become sensitive to testosterone when they seemed not to be before? I'm 26 and have never had a problem with facial hair before and have noticed some fine dark hairs on my chin and also on my stomach which are concerning me. I just want to do what I can to prevent the problem from becoming worse.  Answer

bullet I don't hear anyone talking about hormone replacement and birth control. When one reaches peri-menopausal stages, there is always the risk of an accidental pregnancy in people who think they have passed the age and are not careful. I've never heard of this among acquaintances over 50 but I certainly have heard stories about women in their 40's. Do those HRT's like Orthoprefest function the same way as birth control pills so that ovulation doesn't happen?   Answer

bullet I am a 22 year old woman who has been experiencing hair loss since the age of 14. At the beginning I didn't pay much mind to my hair loss as I started out with an extremely full head of hair. As I have gotten older and the hair loss has persisted, I can now see my scalp, and it is very emotionally straining on me. I have gone to many dermatologists, and have been said to have androgenetic alopecia, which they also said can not be helped. In your opinion can you tell me if you think my hair loss sounds like it can be due to my hormones being imbalanced. And do you think my emotionally scaring condition can be helped?  Answer

bullet I have an appointment in a week, but before I go I would like to know if the Norplant implants could have been a factor in hair loss. I also used to comb my hair tightly and my friend told me it could be traction alopecia.  Answer

bullet I am a 28 year old woman living in Australia and am considering traveling to New York to see Dr Redmond as I have had alopecia areata intermittently since I was six years old and it has now become alopecia universalis as no treatments are working. My hair fell out as a child almost annually until i got my period at 14yrs old, and didn't fall out aging totally until I was 25. From 20 to 25 there were a couple of patches which were treated with cortisone injections, but at 25 all my hair fell out and no treatments (minoxidil, puva, diphencyprone) were effective. I have worn a wig for 2 years and my hair has started to grow and fallen out again twice within that time.  Answer

bullet How reliable, if at all are at home hormone saliva tests? I have no insurance and was thinking that this would be a good way to test my hormones. Also, if they are reliable would a doctor take the results and possibly proceed with treatment?
Thank you for a great website!

bullet I'm 53 years old and my sex drive has been very low for many years. I have not yet experienced any signs of menopause and my doctor has tested my hormone level and agrees. Now, with all the TV advertising about female libido enhancers, my husband is encouraging me to try one (Libidoplex). I don't want to be taken by a snake oil salesman. I understand that it is an herbal supplement. How does a female libido enhancer work and can it really help?  Answer

bullet As far as androgenic alopecia is concerned, will progesterone therapy restore the balance and allow the body to again grow hair?  Answer

bullet My 15 1/2 year old daughter's right breast is considerable smaller than her left breast which is almost not even developed. She is very self conscious of this . What can I do and what can she do to " hide" this. She has worn padded bra's and that has seemed to help her. I will accept any suggestions you might have.  Answer

bullet

My doctor prescribed aldactone 100mg for me but I am worried about taking it because I read that it may cause enlargement of the breasts and voice change. Can I also take Glucophage (metformin) with it?  Answer

bullet Please give some advice on antidepressants specifically SSRI's and decrease in sex drive? I have been placed on other antidepressants and they do not help and the only ones that I can seem to function on mentally are SSRI's specifically Paxil 40mg.
Thank you!
Answer

bullet First of all, thank you SO much, Dr. Redmond, for your kindness and caring. I have noticed a drastic thinning of my hair in the past several months. I have been on Estratest since my hysterectomy 8 years ago. I have noticed no problems from it and had no hair problems at all. My cardiologist put me on Lotrel for high blood pressure. It was during this time that my hair problem began. I insisted on stopping the Lotrel in November and I seem to have stopped losing as much hair. What is your opinion? Answer

bullet I am 22, and have been on Ortho Tricyclin for about 6 years. I suffer from alopecia, and believe that my pill helps keep it somewhat at bay. What is your opinion of the new pill, Seasonale, that cuts the number of periods to just four times a year? Do you think this pill would be helpful with my alopecia?  Answer

bulletI have read that treatment of hirsutism with spironolactone can show positive results within about six months. So, after those six months can the patient stop taking the medication, or will it be necessary to take it indefinitely?  Answer

bulletI believe I have hirsutism and have done extensive research on what I will probably need to rid myself of this problem. Yet everything seems to be not breastfeeding friendly. How am I to get this problem solved and continue my breastfeeding relationship with my son?  Answer

bulletI'm 53 years old and I am in menopause. I have skipped 8 periods and do not get hot flashes or night sweats., however I do get bladder infections almost every month. What can I do about that. I use vagifem twice a week and it worked for awhile. Now it seems I'm back to square one again. The vagifem doesn't seem to be working. Do you have any suggestions?  Answer

bulletI am a 35 year old female with diagnosed AGA (biopsy). All hormone tests are normal -- my androgens are normal. I am now considering propecia. In your practice how effective is this medication for hair regrowth in women? Why do published results (postmenopausal women) indicate this medication does not work if DHT is the cause? Thank you for your time.  Answer

bulletOver time, does shaving cause hair to grow back thicker or coarser?  Answer

bulletI have been losing a lot of hair for the last 6 years, and at the beginning was diagnosed hyperandrogenism based on hormone analyses, presumably due to PCOS. I also have some acne and recently also some unwanted hair on the face. Now the hair loss is indeed notorious. However, it does NOT follow the expected FEMALE PATTERN, but it is mainly on the temples (where it is severe, both in density and thickness/length), and at the sides, i.e. between temples and ears, where I notice a significant hair density decline (although with no thinning as in temples). Can this pattern be attributed to androgenic or other hormone-related alopecia, or do you think it could be an independent problem?  Answer

bullet I have been reading about PCOS all night. I was diagnosed several years ago. What I am trying to find out is: Does Metformin shrinks cysts? I have read everywhere that women have a normal menstrual cycle after using it, get pregnant, and reduced chance of miscarriage, helps weight loss.
I just canít find the answer I am seeking. Any help is appreciated.

bulletI'm 17 yrs. old and one of my breast is a DD and the other is like a B or C. It's really embarrassing because I have to wear padding in my bra because I don't want people to know of my abnormality. My doctor doesn't know why my breast is like that and I was wondering if you would know of anyone who would know about my specific problem. I want to have surgery on it but the surgery cost so much money I wouldn't know how to afford it. I'm to embarrassed to date anyone. Answer

bullet I recently read an article that stated high levels of mercury can also cause people to lose their hair. I eat a lot of tuna, salmon and mahi-mahi and am wondering if this could be my problem. Answer

bullet I am 19 and I took a birth control pill called Trivora for a year. When I got off of it, I started growing facial hair on my chin and side of my face. Could this have caused it? And if so, can I do anything about it? Answer

bullet I've been given a prescription for Estratest (low dosage) for HRT because I complained of sexual dysfunction and hot flashes. Previously I've been controlling hot flash symptoms for 3 years by taking birth control (Alesse) pills. I am 50 years old. Recent studies show possible problems with HRT but no problem with birth control. Why not just stay on the birth control pills?

Also, since I have a healthy uterus shouldn't I be taking a combination of estrogen and progesterone anyway? Estratest seems to be lacking progesterone. My research shows an increased risk of uterine cancer if I don't take the combined dosage. If I should have testosterone also (for libido) should my testosterone levels be checked before prescribing and then monitored while on the hormones?
Answer

bullet Last August I had the mirena put in which is basically made up of
levonorgestrel. Three months later, in November, my hair started to fall out
and there has been radical thinning across the top of my scalp and at the
front on either side of my hair parting. Because of this I had the mirena
removed last month. Do you think my hair loss was as a result of the mirena
and more importantly, now that it's been removed will it grow back?
Answer

bullet In your book, you said that the cyproterone acetate in Diane-35 has some of the same side effects as Provera. I experienced those when I tried Diane-35. What are the side effects of drospirenone in Yasmin besides the diuretic one? How would the side effects of this progestin compare with norgestimate in Orthocyclen?  Answer

bullet Thanks for answering questions for which answers are usually rarely available. Recently I visited a dermatologist for my hair loss and she told me a low level chronic stress causes chronic Telogen effluvium. She also told me to take prescriptions for stress relief. Is this diagnosis true because I have heard that stress cannot cause hair loss. There seem to be two schools of thought on this subject.  Answer

bullet What are your thoughts on reported connections between acne treatments tetracycline/minocycline and hair loss? I began to experience mild acne a little less than a year ago and was prescribed tetracycline. After a couple of months the acne cleared, but I also noticed significant thinning in the temple areas. I stopped taking the medication over 5 months ago and there's been no regrowth. My dermatologist told me there was no connection, but I had no lifestyle changes besides the medication to cause the hair loss.  Answer

bullet I am a 25 year old that went on to Diane 35 for 4 months to treat mild acne. I stopped after 4 months because I felt like it was getting worse after 4 months. Now my acne is worse than when I first began the birth control pill. Now, 11 months later I still suffer from acne. I was wondering if by going onto this pill if I have caused a permanent hormone imbalance? Answer

bulletI just recently had a baby girl. A month ago I realized my otherwise very thick and strong healthy hair began to shed noticeably and it is beginning to worry me. I don't know if its form being stressed because I need a job or is it from me having the baby who is now 3 months old (note: I have a 8 year old son and it did not happen when I had him.) Answer

bullet I am a teenager, and I have noticed many changes in my body hair. I was wondering if this would have anything to do with the hormones that are in the foods we buy and eat. Answer

bullet I have one breast that looks like an adult breast and the other is much smaller and still looks like a child's budding breast. I had a doctor say it might have to
do with my hormones. I would like any information you can give me about
these issues.

bulletFirstly, thank you for your honest and easy to understand site.
My question: Is Hormonal alopecia the same as Androgenic alopecia; and if it is not would Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) stop hair loss in hormonal alopecia? And does hormonal alopecia shrink the hair size or does this only occur with continued hair loss?
Answer

bulletI was wondering about the concept of Vestigial Organs. Like the appendix and the tail bone, will hair start disappearing in the human species because there seems to be no physiological use for it? Should we have to stop the process of evolution to cure hair loss? Almost all my friends inevitably say that their parents had more hair than them. My mother at 56, has more hair than me at 28 and we do not have any history of balding in the family. The problem of hair loss seems to be more and more prevalent.  Answer

bullet My wife 27 years of age experienced ectopic pregnancy with her first expected baby, does she have a chance to be pregnant again? Answer

bulletAfter trying every dermatologic treatment for my acne to no avail, I began taking otho Tri Cyclen and after 2 months my skin was completely clear. bulletI'm a healthy 26 year old and I've had acne since I was 12. A gyno gave me Aldactone to take. He said the hair and acne on my chin is due to hormones. Aldactone didn't clear up my acne and I took accutane too, but my acne came back. Is Diane 35 any more dangerous than other BCP's such as Ortho-tricyclin? I've talked to women who have taken both and the side effects with Ortho-Tri seems to be more sever than Diane 35 so I don't understand why Diane 35 is not FDA approved. Answer

bulletI have been on Estratest for 11 years now since having a hysterectomy at an early age. Now I am having thinning of hair around my hair line. Can that be related to the medication? Also I developed panic attacks, can that make my hair thin?  Answer

bulletI am 33 years old and have been experiencing a serious amount of hair shedding for about the past 6 weeks. I have been taking Paxil CR for about 16 weeks. The strange thing is that the hair that is growing back is very thin in diameter and frizzy and unruly. Not nearly as thick as my hair used to be. Do you think this has been caused by the antidepressant?  Answer

bulletI've been taking Diane 35 for 1 1/2 years. Due to much improvement, I have stopped taking it for 3 months. But after that my acne re-occurred and it covers my chest area. Now the doctor had just advised me that I cannot stop taking Diane-35. I'm afraid that if I continue taking for a long time, I might not be able to conceive in the near future? Answer

bulletFirst I would like to say THANK YOU for helping women with these issues. To many times we are told nothing can be done. If only there were more doctors like you. I am 31, have experienced continued hair shedding since my daughters birth 14 years ago. Recently I started taking 150mg of Spironolactone. After about 3 months it seemed to help well. But it only helped for about 3 months. Do you know why this would happen? Where could I go from here? Answer

bulletI am 45 years old and have recently been experiencing hair loss. My physician prescribed Premphase to alleviate the hair loss. I haven't started taking the medication because of the many concerns I have regarding increased risks for breast cancer, heart disease, and blood clots. My doctor has assured me that there are relatively few risks for women who take hormone replacement therapy for less than five years. My question for you is, if I experience decreased hair loss while taking this medication, what will happen when I stop taking it at the end of the five years? Will my hair start falling out again? Answer

bulletSeveral of my daughter's friends are taking a breast enhancement product from www.wonderbreast.com . They all say it works and now my daughter wants to try it. bullet My last period was 3/01-however, I recently went through PMS again and had a period in July of this year. I am 54 yrs old and have been having hot flashes for the past 5 years. Also, my prior periods were coming every 3 months.  Answer

bullet I was prescribed 100mg of Aldactone per day by my dermatologist, to treat acne, but I've been doing some research since and I realized that it can actually worsen your testosterone level (cause facial hair, deeper voice etc.) How can an anti-androgenic drug have this adverse effect and am I in danger of having these unwanted effects with my dosage?  Answer

bullet I am 52 and going through menopause. I fought taking any HRT because I was afraid of hair loss. I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis in 1999 and had some hair loss with that (but it grew back). Treating that has been an on/off again problem though. My hair recently started shedding horribly again. My gyn just put me on Estratest - H.S. and prometrium. I asked about doing blood work first and she said "no - try this first." I have a problem with that. I have one of your books and after reading this information on your web site too, I am concerned about taking anything with testosterone. I really don't know what to do. I'm so confused and the doctor acts like I'm questioning her abilities. Read Answer

bullet I am 47 years old and just had some blood tests to check my hormone levels. I went to the Dr. because I had been noticing an increased amount of hair loss and thinning (my hair texture in some areas had actually changed). My Dr. informed me that I was menopausal, but did not seem overly concerned. I have an appointment with a Dermatologist but from everything I have been reading, I wonder if this will help. I also been experiencing other mild symptoms (fatigue, headache, indigestion, anxiety and mood swings) but the hair loss is the most overwhelming. If I was your patient what type of testing might you do? Also, do you have a high success rate for treating women experiencing hair loss due to menopause? How long does this "condition" last? I am not taking any type of HRT currently. Read Answer

bullet I have a five-year old daughter who has hair growth on her back. She has always had a hairy back but over the years it seems to be more and growing longer. Some hormonal test were done and I was told that the hair on her back was just her make up. I am concerned for when she does go through puberty. bullet I am 37 years old and had a hysterectomy three years ago. I recently noticed a thinning of hair on the top, front portion of my head. I am on Esclim patch and was wondering if that could be causing this. I have only started noticing this over the past two months or so. I have been on esclim for about 6 months.
Prior to Esclim I was on another patch and changed because it was difficult to keep on and esclim seems to stay on better. The thinning is not noticeable to anyone else yet but me. However, I am fearful that it is worsening. Can you help. I am really concerned about the thinning.

bullet I am 10 weeks pregnant, have PCOS, and am IR. I'm not on any meds currently for the IR, but my Dr. wants me to start insulin shots or go on an insulin pump. The reason is - I've tried glucophage and couldn't tolerate it. So he told me I have to be on something because when I check my blood sugar levels, my levels vary from 120's all the up to 180's. I will do what I have to ... even if its shots, but before I do, is there anything else I can try? And what is happening to the fetus now while I'm not on meds and my blood sugar levels are so high?
